The Beginning of Rebel Yoga // pt. 1

There once was a chick who defined her worth as how fast she could run, how heavy she could lift and how long she could hold a handstand (which was never very long). This chick ran cross country and competed in weight lifting competitions so it was hard to tame her ego. Until one competition, her UCL, a ligament in the elbow tore, performing an overhead squat in a competition without proper form. Fast forward, she had to get Tommy John surgery, which at the time was performed on less than 2% of women due to the injury being male dominant and 60% from the MLB. Recovery was 6-9 months in what she called a bionic arm and then finally, freedom to hit physical therapy and work on grip, strength and extension.

Ride home from surgery.

This chick is known to get bored easily, so physical therapy didn’t last long once a friend convinced her to go to a hot yoga class. Yoga in general has such a stereotype for being, boring, calm, too woowoo and gearing towards a certain demographic, so initially she was turned off but went anyway……long story short she was hooked. She found yet another outlet to feed her ego and started to become a regular and challenge herself with the most advanced postures. This shifted into a consistent Bikram yoga practice 5x a week, 90 minute classes and 40 minutes of commuting which led to some serious focus and control over her adhd, adding balance, structure and zen into her day to day.

One day she decided, “Im going to do my yoga teacher training” knowing and always referring to herself as someone that was not good at teaching people much of anything or being “the employee you wouldn’t want training you on your first day at a new job”. Yoga training cracked her open and tamed her ego, guiding her to her purpose and opening up a step towards her greatest potential. Before taking a class during the last weeks of training she said to herself, “One day I will have a studio and call it Rebel Yoga” unknowing how her life will drastically unfold from that day and one day bring together the most amazing energies we call our rebel community today.
